Elijah K. Hubbard was born in Middletown, CT, and attended school in West Haven, CT. From May 1826 until August 1827, he attended the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy (forerunner of Norwich University), which was then located in Middletown, CT. After leaving the Academy, Hubbard studied law at Yale University until 1830. In 1831, he enrolled in Middlebury College and received his degree from that institution in 1832.
